Quonset Hut Notes

Dimensions and such

Preliminary discussion have us building a hut of the following dimensions:

  • 18' rib (two ribs make an arc)
  • Arcs are 10' apart (actually should go with 8')
  • 80' (ish) spine
  • 2" PVC acquired in 20' lengths (maybe 3")
  • 2 36'x40' tarps will provide the covering ($144 ea)
  • Tarps have a grommet every 18" so we need 27 bungee balls per 40' edge
  • 100 6" bungee balls cost $25 (we should get 200)

Initially we'll buy enough pvc to build two arcs, a spine and a side support (or 1x6 for that) and test build that for sturdiness

Carl-approved.pngThe Carl Edwards Guarantee: There's 0% chance of the monkey hut hurting anyone.

Other notes

-Wind typically comes from SSW direction

-Monkey Hut should be built perpendicular to the prevailing winds

-The only way to get decent candy-caned rebar is with a torch, in my experience. I also use smaller gauge rebar for the candy-caned part.

-Additionally, so as to minimize dust and wind as much as possible, I fasten the tarp down to the ground at every single gromment -- just as the tarp needs to be fastened to the ribs at every grommet with whatever you are using.

-highly recommend using 3' metal stakes instead of rebar -- don't bend, easier to pound in and get out, etc...
